You know what I did to kick off Health Month? I drank a pint of Newcastle, a pint of Bushmills, a vodka or two, smoked a bunch of cigarettes, and ate the fuck out of a plate of homemade enchiladas. While that was going on, I played several rounds of Uno with friends and listened to a lot of awesome records.

Likely I will be run over by a bus tomorrow, or I will die slowly of emphysema but still hang on till I'm 95, attaining my lifelong goal of being a grumpy, cantankerous old man and dying miserably, much like my forebears.

I salute those of you who have the wherewithal to deny yourselves all the shit you'd rather be doing for a month; I don't have the stones (or attention span) for that. But as someone who has been staring down the proverbial barrel since time immemorial, I gotta say, goddamn those enchiladas were good.

I ate a chicken gizzard yesterday.

It tasted like chicken.  Except...um...chewier?  I don't know.  But it wasn't gross or anything.  It was fried, so it really could have been anything.

Yesterday pretty much sucked until I got to McLeod, even though I got there too late to see everything.  Saw hella peeps there.  Found more ways how this world/state/city is too small. 

Upon reentering Ballard, I ran into Tim Seely + entourage, wherupon a whole mess of peoples went to his house and drank whatever we could muster and ate delicious party pizzas.

Man, I could really go for a burger right now.

Work is stressful today. But I'm totally rocking out to Silkworm's cover of the Fleetwood Mac nugget "The Chain". And that's alright.

Apparently, Washington State grows the largest number of Concord grapes in the country, followed by New York, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Missouri1.

If that's the case, then how come I ain't never seen 'em in a grocery store until last week? I wasn't even sure they were a real type of grape, since the only thing I ever see the name associated with are artificially flavored grape things.

Today's culinary experiment:

(Preface: often I'll do a recipe, but not have all (or any) of the right ingredients. So I follow the directions anyway using what I got. Hence tonight's dinner)

First, I sauteed some chopped up carrots, celery, and cucumber in 1 tablespoon of canola oil. (Note to self - leave out the cucumber next time - it got sour tasting at the end). I let these cook for a while (10 minutes or so). Then I added a few tablespoons of vegetable broth, and tossed in some sliced cherry tomatos. More sauteeing. In the meantime, I put 1 cup of vegetable broth and 1 sliced up Yukon gold potato into a pot and simmered. Added the vegetable mixture to the pot. Covered and simmered until the potatoes were cooked all the way through. Spooned into a bowl and topped with a (small) dollop of low-fat sour cream and sprinkled with toasted pine nuts. Served with a diet cola. Well, you can drink whatever the fuck you want, but I drank a diet cola.

Tonight: I watch the Grammys and laugh/be annoyed.

Marinated 2 chicken breasts in teriyaki sauce, with lemon peel and coriander for...a while. I don't remember how long. 45 minutes or so. Cut up half an onion and a green bell pepper, added some slices of fresh ginger and soaked it all in the juice of half a lemon. Sauteed the vegetables in a skillet with a little bit of canola oil, and added a dash of coriander and cayenne. Did the chicken on a George Foreman grill for...a while :) Covered the chicken with the veggies, and served with a baked potato and an ear of corn. And a root beer.

Verdict: good. Should have flattened the chicken breasts so that they'd cook more evenly, and take the marinade more. They could have stood to be marinated longer, of course. The plan for tonight was stuffed peppers, but one of the peppers was bad, as well as alot of the other ingredients I had, so I had to improvise.

Resigned myself to sleeping in when I went to bed last night. Too bad I was up after 5.5 hours. Got domestic on my apartment's ass, and then went and ran some errands. Went to Belltown to find food, leading me to Sit & Spin, where, in a weird replay of last night, I ran into [livejournal.com profile] huntingtonforge. We sat and chatted fer a bit, and then I took my loser ass to see Lord Of The Rings (no, I hadn't seen it yet). I think I might have to go read the books now. I tried to find them at Twice Sold Tales, but no dice. Came away with The Agricola and The Germania by Tacitus instead. A short jaunt down Broadway landed me at QFC for some extra h0tt XXX gr0c3ry shopping. Got about half done - will get all the produce at Pike Place in the morning.

Is it just me, or are the most interesting parts of Olympic events the crashes?

Quinoa with cooked corn and raw carrots. Added the corn while the quinoa was cooking, and seasoned with coriander and onion. Added some margerine after it was done cooking, and then tossed in the carrots.

Wasn't scrumptious, but completely edible.
