RIP Tommy Makem

When I was a kid, Saturday mornings meant waking up to my dad blasting his Irish music, and often times it was The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem. I hated that stuff when I was little, but I gained an appreciation for it later on. It's still not my favorite thing in the world to listen to, but it's my heritage & shit, ya know?

Oh, me too. Every Saturday, local AM radio had (and still had) The Irish Hour (three hours long) hosted by a buddy of my dad's. Played some good stuff. And my dad had every single record by the Clancy Bros. / Tommy Makem, The Chieftains, The Wolfe Tones...

I feel the same way about the music; but more than once it's made me cry while drunk. Esp. when the lyrics are re: sons singing about dead fathers. Jesus.

Now I feel like getting a harp tattoo. WTF?

Aren't all Irish songs about dead fathers? Or death somehow? :)
