Talkin' All That Jazz
Jul. 24th, 2001 02:25 pmThe whole 3rd Bass discussion that was happening got me thinking about samples. I have 3rd Bass to thank for getting me into Tom Waits ("Way Down In The Hole"). In fact, a big reason why I got into a lot of old soul, R&B, and rock records is because of hip-hop. What I think is weird is that now rock bands are sampling old hip-hop songs - anyone catch Limp Bizquick borrowing Eric B & Rakim's "My Melody"?
Here are some of my favorites and notable uses:
Run DMC "What's It All About" sampled the Stone Roses' "Fools Gold"
Blackstreet's "No Diggety" sampled Bill Withers' "Grandma's Hands"
Eric B & Rakim's "Microphone Fiend" sampled Average White Band's "Schoolboy Crush"
Brand Nubian gets two: "Slow Down" sampled Edie fucking Brickell & The New Bohemians' "What I Am"; "Wake Up" sampled Roy Ayers' "Everybody Loves The Sunshine"
Ice T's "Personal" sampled Heart's "Magic Man"
Everlast's "I Got The Knack" sampled The Knack's "My Sharona" (I think this was Ev's first single circa 1989 and is truly awful)
The Pharcyde's "Passin Me By" used the intro from Jimi Hendrix's "Third Stone From The Sun" and the loop was from Quincy Jones' "Summer In The City", which was the b-side to the theme from "Sanford & Son", and if anyone knows where I can get my hands on a copy of this 45, you will be rewarded greatly in heaven.
2 Live Crew's "Sex Shop" (or was it "Fuck Shop"?...I can't believe I like them...) sampled Van Halen's "Ain't Talkin' Bout Love", and "My Seven Bizzos" sampled Jimi Hendrix's "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)"
Isis's "The Power Of Myself Is Moving" (? - it's been 10 years probably since I heard it) sampled Slave's "Just A Touch Of Love"
Digital Underground's "Freaks Of The Industry" sampled Donna Summer's "Love To Love You Baby", and "Same Song" sampled Brides Of Funkenstein's "Disco To Go"
Donald D's "Notorious" sampled Steve Miller's "Fly Like An Eagle"
Above The Law's "Untouchable" (I think that was the song) used The Doors' "Light My Fire" and part of the theme song to a 60s or 70s cop show...it was another Quincy Jones composition, but I can't think of what show it was.)
The Geto Boys' "Gangster Of Love" sampled (not surprisingly) Steve Miller's "The Joker", and they had another song that used Pink Floyd's "Money"
I can't think of any more right now...anyone else have any that they can think of?
