Sen. Helms Will Not Seek Re-Election, Reports Say

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican Sen. Jesse Helms, a congressional champion of conservative causes for nearly 30 years, is expected to announce Wednesday he will not seek re-election next year, according to news reports Tuesday. The News & Observer of Raleigh, North Carolina, said in an online report that Helms would announce his decision live on local television station WRAL-TV, where he once was political commentator and executive vice president.

Well, I guess we can expect a book, a speaking tour, maybe an honorary doctorate from Bob Jones University...

Yeah, but he won't be able to make or change laws anymore. Heck, I'll go hear him speak if it keeps him out of the legislature...

Maybe he can take Strom Thurmond with him.

That's better than wishing him dead I guess. So, yeah. Let's make Strom go with Jesse!

I guess wishing them dead is bad, but I figger ol' Strom should be kickin' the bucket any day now...

What the hell kind of name is Strom anyway?

[identity profile] harperwilla.livejournal.com 2001-08-21 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Hello, English-named Irishman. I'd watch who yer makin' fun of if I were you.

I've always wanted to name my first born Strom. Whadya think?

[identity profile] circumambulate.livejournal.com 2001-08-21 02:39 pm (UTC)(link)
And, almost more importantly, he won't be chair of the Foreign Relations Committee, anymore. Helms is likely not running so that the way will be clearer for Elizabeth Dole.

Thurmond has already announced that he won't run, again. (thank God) But, he's managed to get his son nominated for US Attorney from S. Carolina, before he goes. Ahhh, nepotism is a beautiful thing.

What do I think? Give my condolences to the father.

Really - what kind of name is STROM? That sounds like a cartoon villian. At least my name, though an inferior Saxon one, is a real name.

I'm guessing his son is a sprightly 103 years young, or somewhere thereabouts?

Strom is a German name (surprised?) that means "stream" according to some random baby name site.

It sounds funny, but it means something quite nice. And it doesn't sound any funnier than Archibald...

Actually, he's 28.

Altogether, now.....EWWWWWWW!

Yowza. Ewwww is right.

True, true...but it seems like there are more Archibalds than Stroms.

How about Gunter? Or Dieter?

Re:

Heimlich. With my last name. It's perfect.

Strom and Jesse are done! Strom and Jesse are done!

Re:

Ha ha ha...Heimlich (insert real name here)that would be perfect.

Or Hugh.

[identity profile] harperwilla.livejournal.com 2001-08-21 03:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Hugh Heimlich (my last name). And I'd tack on a "the third" just because it sounds good.

The Third, Esquire.

Yes, indeedy. I'm damn proud of that boy. He owns three Quickie Marts just outside of Tallahassee. He's done right by his momma he has. Was gonna be a lawyer, but I said, "Hugh, what you wanna do that for? There's plenty of lawyers. Get yerself a business is what you should do. Then you'd really be your own man." Between my encouragement and the cocaine bender that he went on that kinda alienated him from his lawyer buddies, he was inspired to follow his momma's advice. And I couldn't be prouder.

Lawd Jesus.

I wasn't expecting that.

There's someone in our system whose last name is Crackenberter. Another named Boffo. And one with the unwieldly moniker Brzymialkiewicz.

Re:

[identity profile] harperwilla.livejournal.com 2001-08-21 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Poor Archibald Brzymialkiewicz. And poor Misty Shores. Why, why, why would parents do such things?

To build character.

Or because they're sadists. Or dense.

actually, being your only lj friend from NC ( i think?) i feel i must stick up for the old fart... im very non-political, very very much so, and people may not agree with him all the time, but you have to keep in mind that the people are the ones who vote the senate in... and you cant blame that on dumb redneck southern people because some crazy number like 75% of the population in the last 20 years are relocated yankees from ny state who have moved down with IBM into the RTP... so seeing as i have no care at all in what his policies are, or any politician for that matter, (i am the laziest anarchist youll ever meet, im too lazy to even care enough to hate the government!) he must have done something right to get that many of the votes to keep him in those many years... and actually hes a really sweet guy if you ever meet him...

haha!! im serious!!!

Or, perhaps, most people just adopted your theory that he can't be that bad, if people keep voting for him.
