Jesse Helms, a congressional champion of conservative causes for nearly 30 years, is expected to announce Wednesday he will not seek re-election next year, according to news reports Tuesday. The News & Observer of Raleigh, North Carolina, said in an online report that Helms would announce his decision live on local television station WRAL-TV, where he once was political commentator and executive vice president.
