Whoever is DJing at KEXP right now could soooo lose their shift for what they just played...I dunno what song that was, but they were sayin' shit that they aren't allowed to say on the radio, even after 10:00 PM when bad words become OK. Well, unless someone from the FCC or some watchdog group was listening, they'll be ok, but dang...

How strongly would Tipper Gore disappove? I mean, was it a song about gay cowboys eating pooty or soemthing?

Well, not quite...it was, from what I could tell, a relatively graphic description of two male rappers having their way with a variety of women, employing the use of telephone cords in some sort of S-M act.

Having volunteered for the radio station in question as a naughty word cop, I recognized the terms "pussy", "nigga", and "fuck" (in a sexual sense) as being terms regarded as "not OK for broadcast at any time of day".

(Update: the DJ is DJ Riz, who's been with the station for years, who has tenure, and who will never lose his slot. Nebermind.)

(And the group in question was De La Soul!)

i'm really disappointed in de la. do you know if it was a song from their new album? and did you call riz and talk to him about it?

sexual violence is never okay, no matter what time of day it is.

It couldn't have been De La Soul... I looked at the playlist for that timeslot and saw this:

12:24
Lovage "Ladies Love Chest Rockwell"
De La Soul "Held Down"

If that's correct:

The Lovage song has nothing like that in there, and the De La song is from their new album and is about being held down by modern society in the ghetto. It's a pretty incredible track, actually. Listen.

The only time I've heard De La Soul use sexual violence in their music was on the last LP Art Official Intelligence: Mosaic Thump, and in that case it was a spoken word piece (by Sarah Jones I believe) about a woman who is abused by her father and eventually kills herself. It's disturbing to say the least, but it carries a point to it.

I'm not sure who it was, but all I'm saying is don't hang mah De La, yo!

well, that's what i be sayin'! i have never heard lyrics referring to sexual violence in *any* de la song before, but i figured that maybe since their new record came out there was something i didn't know about. ed, what's the follow-up here? i'd like to know a track title for the song you're talking about.

OK, I've just heard the track Ed's talking about. It's all consensual (albeit mad freaky) sex, and the track is called "Pawn Star (feat. Shell Council)" (link is the mp3). Sure, it's not De La's strongest track, in fact it doesn't really fit with the rest of the new LP, which is fucking great. But as the track says, "The contents of this song do not necessarily reflect the views of De La Soul, but hey, we understand."

Oh yeah, the Sarah Jones track I was talking about is the hidden track on Mosaic Thump, thus no track name.

Fuck the FCC. Those are simply "guidelines" for the station, and not the law. It says that the FCC may try to persue prosecution for obscenity against the station if it feels that such a charge would stick, but doesn't overrule the First Amendment.

Yep. But their (meaning the station's) guidelines say that if a DJ plays a "red dotted" song (like that one), they can get canned - this is entirely dependent on whether or not someone calls up and complains, which likely no one lisening at 1 am would.

(And it was De La...Riz said something to the effect of "And that was two from the new De La..." If he played a song that was a no-no, why would he put it up on the site playlist?)

Good point. I've listened to about 4 songs on Bionix, I'll have to peep the rest.
