It's Super Bowl Sunday. Since my job is to sell women's clothing, I have a feeling that I may be fielding a number of calls from Super Bowl refugees.

I've heard that more women are beaten, abused, and raped on Super Bowl Sunday than on any other day of the year. That's pretty fucked. It'd be unfair to characterize (male) football fans as abusers, but what the hell is going on here? Does anyone know anything about this?

Yes, you're absolutely right about the domestic violence issue.

And yes, I'm sure someone will dig up something on Google about the urban legend status of this claim, they will say the numbers simply don't exist to support it... but those numbers depend on independent studies being made, and those studies are grossly underfunded. But ask *anyone* who has worked at a women's shelter or at a domestic violence PD unit (my mom worked at the Seattle PD's DV unit last year) on Super Bowl Sunday... they'll tell you the truth.

I was a Rape Crisis Center counselor for four years in Illinois and I can tell you that the claims are absolutely true.

There are plenty of links to police departments nationwide that corroborate my (and your) claims, if you feel like looking.

I'm sure it has to do with men who get really hyped up and pissed off and full of testosterone and adrenaline. At the end of the day when the game is over, what do they do with all that? Especially if their team lost and they bet a lot of money on it. They need to control.

I dunno. It's fucked but pretty true.

I've heard this from my mother, who worked at a battered women's shelter for years. I figure thats about as good as a claim you can get.

ah! but would it be unfair to characterize abusers as male football fans? i think not...

and i'm actually surprised about these ppl not being able to believe this...like, it's the most over-hyped, testosterone-indusive, BADASS MALE day of the year...yay sports...
