The cops are out in force this fine November morn. There's a cop in the lobby of the Gene Juarez salon (?!), four in front of Dale's building (which is next to a Starbucks, natch), and a few hanging out at the entrance to the bus tunnel. The news crews are likewise out in force. I hear helicopters flying overhead pretty frequently. And it's only 8:30. The real deal doesn't start until noon. They hired a security guard to hang out in the lobby of our building. Didn't see him when I came in. I have a feeling that this whole thing is going to be pretty anticlimactic. The media seems to imply that it is an inevitability that things are going to get violent today, and that the cops are going to be ready to deal with anyone who gets out of line (i.e. kick ass and take names). (Our new police chief reminds me of Robocop.)
Anyway, good luck to anyone who's out there protesting today. Don't trouble yrselves too much if someone can't get into Westlake Mall to buy Christmas gifts. Our right to freely and peacefully assemble and speak our mind supercedes our right to shop.
