The theory is thus: you write an entry full of deep thoughts and feelings and whatnot and no one comments. You write "I like peanut butter." and all of creation comes out of the woodwork to agree or disagree with you.

Why this is, I can't say.

Hmm. I could hazard a guess.
Quantity over quality; ie. It's easier to cultivate computer-type relationships if you have a good innocuous, touch-n-go comment every once in a while.
