A well spent couple of hours...
Mar. 9th, 2001 06:13 pmwere spent at the Baltic Room last night. I witness what will be probably the last Silkworm-related show in Seattle for a long, long time.
The Downer Trio were joined by Tim Midgett (SKWM bassist, on baritone guitar). I'll try to recall what songs they played and in what order, but this will probably be off a little bit. The first three songs were either new or covers, I don't know which. Tim sang on two of them. Then they broke into "Counsel" from Warm Springs Night - a song that never sees the light of day live. Granted, Phelps couln't play guitar, sax and sing like he does on the record, but it was still bitchen. Then it was a much louder, electric "Now You Are Found", which caused people to begin tearing up, myself included. "Get The Chills" was the last song done by this modified "trio". Then someone called out for Mikey, SKWM's drummer to come on up. The reunion I wanted happened (sort of.) They gingerly dug into "Pilot" and "Couldn't You Wait" from In The West. They also did "Little Sister" from L'jare, which is one of the most ancient 'Worm songs. Tim strapped on Joel's guitar and they did Dramarama's "Emerald City" (from the Downer Trio's 2nd record). Joel even took his glasses off (for once) and looked as if he'd reached some kind of blissed-out Zen state when he was singing that. They also did "Clean'd Me Out" from Blueblood. The night ended when the house lights came up at about 1:30 but Joel didn't want to leave. So he and Tim did "The City Glows" from Devloper. I think at some point they also did "Lost Continent" but I could be imagining that.
It was really strange hearing Joel play guitar on songs that Silkworm wrote years after he quit. But it was also really cool to hear all these old songs live, seeing as how I never saw these guys live when they were still a quartet.
So to sum up, that was the most fantabulous show I have seen in many many moons.
The end.
