Would it be redundant to italicize the word 'emphatically'? Ya know, to, like, put emphasis on it?

I ask because I was rereading an email I sent to my boss where I did just that. And now it is going to haunt me forever and ever.

Actually, I don't think that is one of the correct usages for quotation marks, anyway. Not to be picky, but since you asked....

I could be wrong. Have someone double check. :)

Yeah, that may be the case, but should I have italicized it or not? :)

Ok, so the reason I thought you'd used quotes? There's someone I work with who does that. She is very, erm, stupid. Now, I don't think you're stupid, at all, but I thought maybe this was a common misusage and I wanted to be diplomatic.

Hence, I'm the idiot for thinking you may be! :P

I want to harken back to a conversation you and I had:

Me: OMG OMG OMG!
You: ???
Me: Big problem. I just realized the album title is -insert album title here-...
You: OMG. Can you *talk* to him about it?
Me: Well, I'm gonna *have* to....

-laughs-

Which I'm just pointing out in order to say: I love that my friends are just as nerdy as I am... ;)

Yes, I did. It took me like two whole hours to come up with how to phrase the question, even. ;p

(And, as it turns out, it was an "in-joke" or something.)

Plus, I'm obviously too stupid to actually READ what you wrote!! I saw the quotation marks and read the emphasis part and thought, 'Oh no! Just like M does!' :P

I'm guessing he didn't use quotes in the e-mail, just in the post--which is correct. :) But italics, yeah, that's probably redundant, but most folks wouldn't care.

Here's the sentence:

I emphatically recommend cutting these customers off.

(It wasn't bold originally.)

Yeah, really that's not too bad. A little verbal overkill never hurt nobody.

-snickers-

Could you BE any more emphatic?

(Perhaps only if you'd written: I emphatically recommend...)

Dude. You've lost all your sexy nerd cred...

I wonder... Would it have been more redundant to write:

I emphatically recommend...?

I think so.

nah, i don't think it's redundant...it just adds to the emphasis...i guess emphasis isn't an on/off yes/no situation, you're building onto it...just there're no redundancy to the following: "that's amazing!" "that's really amazing!" "that's really fucking amazing!" "holy fuck! that's really fucking amazing!" "holy fucking fuck! that's fucking really fuck fucking fuck fuck amazing as fuck!" etc...in my opinion anyway...

Damn. I should have said "I fucking emphatically fucking recommend cutting these fucking customers off."
